Der Amerikaner Todd Boyce gestaltet die Titelrolle hervorragend als stimmlich weicher Bariton und charakterlich weltverlorener Träumer. Dass die übrigen Rollen der Oper alle namenlos sind und nur episodische Bedeutung bekommen, entbehrt zwar nicht der Logik, verhindert aber, dass man sich als Zuschauer mit ihnen identifizieren kann. Insbesondere fehlt eine starke Frauenrolle, die als Gegengewicht zu Victor auftreten könnte. Ansatzweise ist sie durch die singende Skulptur von Carla Maffioletti gegeben, die im vierten Bild unerwartet im «antilopischen Stil» von Victor zu singen beginnt.
The American Todd Boyce created the title role as vocally excellent soft baritone and temperamentally world of lost dreams. That the other roles of the opera are all nameless and only get episodic significance, though not devoid of logic, but prevents people can identify as a spectator with them. In particular, a strong woman role that could occur as a counterweight to Victor missing. To some extent it is given by the Singing Sculpture by Carla Maffioletti, in the fourth picture unexpectedly in “antilopischen style” begins to sing of Victor.

Da singt man etwa über ein “von Hunden bepisstes” Kunstwerk, aus dem plötzlich eine Frau herausschaut und im Stile von György Ligetis “Le Grand Macabre” singt, Carla Maffioletti macht es hinreißend. Textprobe gefällig? “Rrr Rrrr rehoboam salamanasar.” Dies ist übrigens reinstes Antilopisch, welches auch unser Victor bestens beherrscht. Rund um die musikalische Skulptur positioniert Grünbein eine kleine, böse Tirade gegen aktuelle ästhetische Debatten, aber sonst herrscht blankes Kasperltheater mit gelegentlich gruseligen Momenten.
